Multi Touch is just the start, Panav Mistry and Media Labs from MIT have developed a mobile phone that can project itself on any surface, including your hand, a wall, a table or even your plane ticket to make calls, take pictures or even check flight times.
This technology is still in development and needs a lot of work, but if you want a glimpse into the future of what mobile technology will look like, check this TED video out. It's pretty amazing.
I'm not trying to predict the next iPhone features, but it's pretty likely the next iteration will include an RFID reader.
The power of this feature will introduce the internet of things to a much larger audience. It will in effect have the same influence the iPhone 3GS has had on augmented reality, well technically layers.
What's possible with mainstream adoption of RFID readers? There are basic things like payment services and how we use the Oyster card in London today. Then there are new communications opportunities, whereby users hold their phone against an object such as a toy and the phone can perform a certain action like playing a movie or presenting a voucher.
This technology has been fairly mainstream in Japan and South Korea for a number of years as this is the strategy handset manufacturers had pursued there. American and European handset manufacturers had lagged in this area for a long time, but if the usage in Japan in any indicator as to what we can expect from this technology, it looks very exciting to say the least.
We've waited a long time for this to take off, and the next iPhone might just do that.
The video below will give you an idea of the sort of interaction and features we can expect.
